Joshua 2:1-15; 6:17-23
Hebrews 11:31
Rahab heard about all the Lord had done for Israel, and believed. She confessed that the Lord "He is God in heaven above and in earth beneath." She knew that her city was doomed. She believed, and was ready to follow the Lord, but had no way to escape the impending destruction.
Of all the places the spies might have gone, they entered her house! God knew her heart. She heard the witness of what the Lord had done, rejected her gods and believed. Still, she was helpless. It's easy to underestimate the power of God. It's easy to subconsciously think that God must work within the boundaries of earthly reality. But God isn't bound by my reality. He knew she believed in Him. He led the spies to her house. Then He delivered her and her family. When the walls fell, He protected her and her family within her house until the spies could lead them away from the city. This was divine protection. The walls fell and her house was on top of the wall! His blessing continued through the rest of her life, and she became the great-great grandmother of King David and is included in the lineage of Jesus (Matthew 1:5).
Rahab was not what I would have judged a likely convert. She lived in a thoroughly pagan city. She was a prostitute. Neither the authorities nor her neighbors suspected that her allegiance had changed. But God knew her heart.
It's so easy to look at the outward appearance of someone and think they will never consider accepting the Lord. But the heart is a secret place. I cannot know what is in anyone's heart. Sometimes I do not understand what is in my own heart. But God sees, knows, understands and intervenes as only He can.
