Matthew 26:26-32
 Mark 14:22-28
 Luke 22:14-20

In these passages, Jesus is observing the Passover meal with His disciples.  The Passover is a celebration to remember how God delivered Israel from captivity, when the angel of death went through the camp taking the life of all the first-born.  The angel "passed over" the house where the blood of the sacrificial lamb was painted on the door frame  (Exodus 12).

In the same way, Jesus said, "Do this in remembrance of Me."  Jesus was about to fulfill all the prophecies of the Messiah.  The blood of the lamb saved the Israelites from the angel of death.  The blood of Jesus would save all who believe on Him from eternal death.  This breaking of bread and sharing of the cup that we call the Lord's Supper is meant to remind us of His broken body and shed blood.  He paid a high price for our sins.  We must never forget or take this lightly.  We break bread, reminding us of how his flesh was torn and mutilated.  We drink of the cup, reminding us of how His blood poured from His body.  All for us.  When we commemorate the Lord's Supper, we should be humbled.  We should examine ourselves, and confess our sinfulness and unworthiness.  We should be thankful, because He did this for us despite our unworthiness.

He did all this so "whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).  Whoever believes in Jesus, the Son of God Who died to pay the price for our sins (Romans 6:23), Who rose again to conquer death and give us eternal life with Him in His kingdom, will be saved (Romans 10:9-10).  We eat the bread and drink the cup to remind ourselves that we have received the gift of His sacrifice.  We were dead in our sins.  We are alive through Christ.  He lives in us.  We owe Him everything and much more.  We should take the bread and the cup thoughtfully, reverently, worshipfully and with great awe and wonder.

In God is my salvation and my glory;  The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

Psalm 62:7  (NKJV)
